Terms of Service
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the TabTap mobile application ("TabTap", the "App", "we", "us", or "our"). By installing or using TabTap, you agree to these Terms.
Plain-language summary
- We don't sell your information. No advertising, no data sales. We store only a little, briefly, to make the app work — see our Privacy Policy for exactly what and for how long.
- No subscriptions. Ever.
- No hidden fees. TabTap charges exactly $0.50 through your phone's app store each time you split a bill. That's it.
- What you're paying for: splitting one bill across one or more people and dispatching their payment requests to Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App. Money never flows through TabTap.
If those four points are all you needed, you can stop reading. The rest is the legal-required version of the same thing.
1. What TabTap does
TabTap helps you split a restaurant bill by photographing the receipt, having each person tap the items they ordered, calculating each person's share with proportional tax and tip, and dispatching payment requests to popular payment apps (Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Cash App).
TabTap does not transfer funds. We do not hold, route, or have custody of any money. When you "send a request" through TabTap, we open the relevant payment app on your phone with the recipient and amount prefilled — the actual transaction happens between you, your friends, and those payment providers.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or at least 16 if you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland) to use TabTap. If you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you must have permission from a parent or legal guardian.
By using TabTap, you represent that you meet these requirements and that you have the right to enter into binding agreements where you live.
3. The $0.50 split-pass fee
Each time you complete a bill split through TabTap, the App charges a $0.50 "split pass" fee through your phone's in-app purchase system (Apple In-App Purchase on iOS, Google Play Billing on Android).
- This is a one-time, consumable purchase per split. There are no subscriptions.
- There are no other fees inside TabTap. No upgrades, no premium tiers, no ads, no add-ons.
- Your payment method is handled by Apple or Google, not by us. We don't see your card or bank information.
- Refunds are processed by Apple and Google per their own policies. If you have a refund request, contact Apple Support or Google Play Support directly.
- The $0.50 covers our cost of running and supporting the app. It does not include any third-party fees that Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App may charge separately — those are between you and those services.
4. What you're agreeing to do (and not do)
When you use TabTap, you agree to:
- Use it only for lawful purposes and only to split bills with people who have agreed to participate
- Not enter someone else's payment handle without their permission
- Not use TabTap for fraud, money laundering, harassment, or any commercial collection activity
- Not attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App
- Not use TabTap to circumvent the policies of any third-party payment app
You are responsible for the accuracy of any information you enter (your name, your payment handles, the amounts allocated to each person) and for resolving any disputes about who owes what.
5. Privacy
TabTap keeps data collection to a minimum. Reading your receipt uses secure cloud processing, and if you choose to share a link, a small amount of split data is stored briefly in our cloud and then deleted automatically — the receipt photo within about an hour of finishing (24 hours at most), and the rest of the split record within 48 hours. We don't run advertising, and we don't sell, share, or trade your personal information. The full picture — what we handle, where it lives, and how long — is in our Privacy Policy.
6. Third-party services
TabTap relies on third-party services to read receipts, store shared splits, accept payment for the split pass, dispatch payment requests, and report crashes. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for their behavior, availability, or any disputes you have with them. The Privacy Policy lists each third-party service we integrate with and links to its policy.
7. Intellectual property
The TabTap name, logo, design, source code, and all other content of the App are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws. You receive a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use TabTap as installed from the official app stores.
You may not redistribute, modify, or create derivative works of the App without written permission.
8. Disclaimers
TabTap is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.
Specifically:
- Receipt reading is imperfect. TabTap uses optical character recognition, including secure cloud processing, to extract item names and prices from receipts. It can misread items, miss items, or get prices wrong. Always review the parsed items and the calculated split before approving.
- Tax and tip math depends on what TabTap can detect. If the parsed totals don't match your receipt, the split may be wrong.
- Payment app behavior is outside our control. If Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App is down, changes its URL scheme, or doesn't deliver a request, TabTap cannot work around that.
- TabTap is not a substitute for professional financial or accounting advice.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of TabTap.
- Our total liability to you for any claim related to TabTap is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) USD $10.
- We are not liable for any errors in receipt reading, calculation, or payment-request dispatch — you are responsible for reviewing each split before approving it.
- We are not responsible for the actions of third-party payment apps or services.
Some jurisdictions don't allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
10. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold us harmless from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of TabTap, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of another person.
11. Termination
You can stop using TabTap and uninstall the App at any time. Doing so will not refund any past split-pass purchases (those are handled by Apple or Google per their refund policies).
We may suspend or terminate your access to the App if you breach these Terms or use TabTap in a way that puts us, our partners, or other users at risk. We will normally give notice if practical.
12. Governing law and dispute resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. The federal and state courts located in California will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of TabTap, except where prohibited by applicable law.
If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection laws, those laws apply to you to the extent they cannot be waived, and you may bring suit in your local courts as those laws permit.
We prefer to resolve disputes informally. Before filing a claim, please email us — most issues can be resolved by a quick conversation.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in the App's release notes. Continued use of TabTap after a change indicates your acceptance of the revised Terms.
A version history of these Terms is maintained in the public repository where they are hosted, so you can see exactly what changed and when.
